Shopping for a flashlight looks simple until you're comparing five listings that all claim to be the brightest. Here's how to cut through the noise and choose with confidence.
Start with the job, not the spec sheet
Before you compare numbers, decide what the light needs to do. The answer narrows the field fast.
1Emergency at homePrioritize long runtime on a moderate setting, a wide beam and a simple switch you can use in the dark.
2Vehicle kitLook for a compact size, a focused beam and a battery that keeps its charge while stored.
3Outdoors and DIYChoose higher output, a durable housing and a solid water rating.
The specs that matter
- Lumens and modes: lumens indicate output. Multiple modes let you trade brightness for runtime as needed.
- Runtime per mode: the number that tells you how long the light will actually last.
- Charging: USB-C is the most convenient option today.
- Durability: aluminum bodies handle drops well; IPX4 or higher handles rain.
The specs that matter less
A long list of novelty modes rarely adds real value. One or two well-chosen extras — a zoom head or an SOS mode — are usually enough.
Our quick checklist
- Can you switch it on easily with gloves or wet hands?
- Does it show remaining charge?
- Will it fit where you plan to keep it?
Expert tip: keep one light where you'd naturally reach for it in a power cut — usually the kitchen or beside the bed — not in the garage.
Charge and store your flashlight according to the manufacturer's instructions, and avoid shining bright beams into anyone's eyes.
